Competitor analysis: what they do and where the gaps are

We work out where competitors get their traffic, what methods they use and what is actually working. Then we compare it to you and show where you lose ground and where you can take it.

Take this service if

A competitor is ahead and the reason is unclear. You can see they rank higher. You cannot see whether it is content, links, technical work, or simply domain age.

You are planning to enter a new niche. You need to know who already holds it and whether you can realistically get in with what you have.

You need arguments for a decision. The board asks why we think we can win. Instinct does not answer that; numbers do.

You want to know what not to copy. Part of what competitors do works because of their scale, and would cost you a lot while producing nothing.

What is included

Not a list of competitors — a breakdown of the mechanics

Where the traffic comes from

The shape of their visibility: which pages and clusters carry the mass, how much is branded, how much is real demand. Separately, their presence in model answers.

By what methods

Content: volume, funnel stages, who it is written for. Links: source types, pace, what can be reproduced and what cannot. Technical base.

Where the gaps are

A comparison against you on each axis, and a list of places where a competitor does not cover a topic and you can move in.

The most useful part of a competitor review is usually not what they do well. It is what they do not do at all — that is where the room is.

How we do it

The order of work

01

Establish who the competitor is

It often turns out the companies you think of as competitors barely overlap with you in search results — and quite different ones do.

02

Pull the data

Visibility, clusters, pages, link profile, mentions. From open sources, so you can check every figure.

03

Break down the mechanics

Not “they have 800 domains” but what kind, from where, at what pace, and which of it your budget can reproduce.

04

Compare against you

The same axes for your site. Output: a table of overlaps and gaps.

05

Draw conclusions

What can be taken now, what needs time, and what is not worth touching at all.

What you get

A document you can act on

A breakdown per competitor: where the traffic comes from and on the back of what

A side-by-side table of them versus you on content, links and technical work

A list of gaps — topics and clusters nobody covers

A reachability assessment: what of it you can realistically take with your current site

Priorities for the first three months

Honest limits: where we are confident and where we are inferring

Case studies

Where a competitor review changed the plan

Every figure comes from Ahrefs, covering the period from the start to the end of the work.

Questions

What we get asked most

How many competitors do you cover?

Usually three to five. More dilutes the conclusions: in a large sample somebody is always doing anything you care to name, and it stops being an argument.

Do you use paid tools?

Yes, but we never build a conclusion on a single number from a single tool. Traffic estimates in narrow B2B niches are wrong regularly — we cross-check sources and state plainly where a figure is an estimate rather than a measurement.

Can we order only the analysis, without promotion?

Yes. It is a standalone service with a defined deliverable. The document is yours and it creates no obligation to continue.

How is this different from step Evaluate in WEDGE?

Evaluate answers whether you can get into a direction, across the whole map of directions. Competitor analysis goes deeper but narrower: how specific companies are built. People often take both, but they are different jobs.
