M HEAVY: zero to top-3 rankings in a niche the SEO tools can’t see

Lead: The shortest full project in our portfolio, and the densest: 700 hours in eleven months. A narrow industrial niche where the standard SEO tools simply can’t see the traffic.

  • tio2 manufacturing process — average position 2.37

Google Search Console (February 2024) and Google Analytics 4 (05.01.2023 – 31.03.2024). This case doesn’t rest on Ahrefs: in narrow industrial niches its estimate is unusable — explained under “What was hard”.

M HEAVY TECHNOLOGY works in heavy industrial equipment. A niche where:

  • there are few queries, and almost all are low-volume;
  • the buyer knows exactly what they need and states it technically;
  • a single inquiry is worth enough that traffic volume stops being a metric at all.

At the start there was no organic traffic.

In a narrow industrial niche it looks as though there’s nothing to choose between: few queries, thin demand. In fact the choice matters more, not less — the resource is limited and a mistake costs more. So directions were chosen through our WEDGE framework.

W — Where the client can win

The competence map was discussed twice — in May and June 2023, as separate tasks. For industrial equipment its structure differs from IT: instead of languages and frameworks, technology directions and equipment types.

What came out of it is visible in the pages that later produced clicks: titanium dioxide production, titanium slag, sinter plants, blast furnace cooling systems, flue gas cleaning, dedusting, water treatment for mining.

We don’t assess anyone’s engineering. How strong the company is at blast furnace design is the company’s own judgement. We bring data on demand and competition.

E — Evaluate whether we can get in

Here the second screen produced the most unusual result in the portfolio, and it concerns the assessment tools themselves.

External services can’t see this niche. Ahrefs estimated the site’s traffic at roughly 28 visits a month. Search Console, over the same period, shows 17,111 impressions.

Had we judged reachability by the external traffic estimate, the conclusion would have been not to enter at all. The demand exists — it just sits in a long tail of low-volume technical queries absent from the service’s index.

This matters for the framework itself: at step E the data source has to match the niche. On broad markets an external estimate works. In narrow industrial ones it doesn’t.

D — Decode who signs the contract

Metallurgical equipment doesn’t get bought on impulse. The decision sits with a technical specialist who phrases the need in their own terms: not “cleaning system” but blast furnace gas cleaning system.

You can see it in the queries the site earns clicks on. So the content was written in the specialist’s language, not marketing’s.

G — Guide them to a decision

Density instead of duration. Around 64 hours a month is double our typical pace. Eleven months carried as much work as two years at a normal rhythm.

E — Expand the coverage

Coverage was built around the technology directions: each got a solution page or a piece in the news section.

The result shows in the positions: tio2 manufacturing process2.37, titanium slag3.23, heavy technology3.69.

Trend: a flat line near zero until October 2023. A steady climb from November, then acceleration through to the end of the work.

Notably, organic engages better than the rest of the traffic: 1m 13s average against 1m 05s overall.

Seventeen thousand impressions a month in a niche where Ahrefs sees 28 visits. That’s the shortest way to explain why external estimates can’t be trusted here.

This is the project’s main technical finding, and it earns its own section.

Over the same period Ahrefs showed around 28 visits a month. GA4 showed around 1,000.

Wrong by a factor of thirty-five.

Why

Ahrefs estimates traffic from its own keyword index. In a narrow industrial niche the bulk of demand sits in a long tail of low-volume technical queries that simply aren’t in that index.

For broad markets the Ahrefs estimate works acceptably. For B2B niches like this one it isn’t merely understated — it’s unusable.

What that means in practice

If your business is a narrow industrial or technical niche and an agency shows you a trend from Ahrefs or a similar service, there’s a strong chance you’re looking at a figure with no relationship to reality. In either direction.

The only reliable source is the counter on your own site.

We write this here even though every other case of ours uses Ahrefs as the base figure. There it’s justified: broad niches, large volumes. Here it isn’t, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.

Density instead of a long runway. 64 hours a month across eleven months.

The right data source at the evaluation step. Had we measured reachability by an external traffic estimate, the conclusion would have been “don’t enter.” Real data showed demand of 17,000 impressions a month.

A niche with little traffic and a lot of meaning. 276 clicks a month isn’t many. But they’re B2B buyers of industrial equipment, and the site sits at position 2–3 for what they search.

In narrow niches, don’t trust external traffic estimates. The discrepancy here was 35×. Look at your own site’s analytics.

Little traffic doesn’t mean a poor result. 276 clicks a month at positions 2–3 on the core queries, in industrial B2B, are worth more than tens of thousands of visits in a broad niche.

A short project can deliver if it’s dense. Eleven months at 64 hours produced growth from zero.

The first months look like nothing — that’s normal. Until October 2023 the chart was a flat line. Growth started in month six.

Work concluded in March 2024, at the peak of the growth.

Is your niche narrow and technical?

Few queries, difficult terminology, expensive inquiries. And probably analytics telling you the wrong thing.

Питання

There’s almost no search demand in our niche. Is SEO worth it?

Often the demand exists and the estimation tools can’t see it. Here Search Console shows 17,000 impressions a month, while an external service estimated the traffic at 28 visits.

Why no Ahrefs data here, unlike your other cases?

Because here it’s wrong. Ahrefs gave ~28 visits a month against ~1,000 in GA4. Publishing that figure would mislead the reader to our own cost.

How long before results?

Growth started around month six here and accelerated to the end of the work.

Can these numbers be verified?

No — these come from Search Console and the client’s analytics, not from a public service. Unlike the rest of our cases, built on Ahrefs, these can’t be checked from outside, and we say so directly.
